The UK is still a member of the EU and will remain so until two years after Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty is invoked.
Once Article 50 is invoked the two sides have two years to agree the terms of the split. Mrs May, the British Prime Minister, has said she will not start this process before the end of 2016. Therefore, the earliest the UK can leave the EU would be the beginning of 2019.
Until then, Britain remains a member of the EU.
