Water Industry Applications

Pulsar Process Measurement has built the business around the needs of the water industry, within which the principle of non-contacting ultrasonic level and flow measurement and control is extremely well established. Pulsar has grown to the position of market leader in ultrasonic open channel flow monitoring and a major force in ultrasonic pump station control. See below for a fuller explanation of our strengths in some key areas of water industry application.

Pump and Pumping Station Control

Pulsar has made substantial strides in the development of pump control. The Pulsar Ultra 5 in pump control mode are packed full of the most sophisticated control routines on the market, allowing engineers to select the routine that best suits the application, whether that is a high throughput urban pumping station or a rural station. RS232, 3 or 5 relays and 4-20mA with the option to add RS485 Modbus and Profibus communications and comprehensive data logging capability with Elephant data logging software. For less demanding situations the Ultra 3 offers the same superb echo processing capacity, DATEM, that allows all Pulsar equipment to measure where no other ultrasonic system on the market could hope to succeed, with a reduced set of pump routines available. Zenith 140 is the high capability system designed to replace the PLC on smaller pumping stations. With seven digital inputs it can effectively monitor pump and valve performance while its Tariffguard software can save substantial percentages of the site energy costs, by minimising energy usage in high tariff periods.

All pump controllers are available in wall, rack, panel and fascia mount versions for ultimate flexibility.

Open Channel Flow Monitoring

The Ultra 3&5, when configured for flow monitoring, are proven across the water industry for its ease of setup and high accuracy. Calculations of flow are made to BS3680, but perhaps more relevant to its success has been the teaming with the amazing dBMACH3 transducer, which has a very high operating frequency of 125KHz to give very good resolution. It is the first transducer to offer NO blanking distance beyond its 70mm nose cone, so that it can be mounted very close to the high water level to give unrivalled accuracy. No wonder then that Severn Trent and other water companies have chosen Flow Oracle for their Urban Waste Water Schemes, and that the Ultra has found its way into the heart of the MCERTS programme. Click here for more product information. Ultra 3 has 3 control relays compared to the five found in Ultra 5, and Ultra 5 will measure a wider range of PMD as standard.

Ultra 3&5 work with all commonly used PMD (Primary Measurement Device) and in the 5-relay version can accept an analogue input from a velocity sensor so that it can perform velocity x height calculations and determine flow in areas with no PMD. Either unit can also be extended to provide full datalogging and digital communications functions.

An "industrial version" is available including everything required to monitor and log flows apart from the PMD in the form of the Flo-pak.

CSO Monitoring

Combined sewer overflow (CSO) monitoring is a specialised application. We have developed a special version of our blackbox non-contacting level unit that can be battery operated. It provides digital Modbus and Profibus communications while at the same time making use of two stage datalogging techniques. It goes into a "sleep" mode, wakening at user determined intervals to make a reading, then sleeping again. If any reading is above a threshold, then a second mode is enabled where the unit records more frequently or even continuously to make sure that perfect CSO site records are kept. Sludge Level Monitoring

Pulsar's SludgeFinder sludge level monitor is an acoustic sensor that sits under the liquid surface of a clarifier or sludge tank. An acoustic signal is bounced off the bottom of the tank and modulations in the returning signal are interpreted to provide a profile of the sludge in the tank. Water companies can use this information to optimise chemical dosage and to save employees from having to make tedious and time consuming manual calculations. Unlike many other devices on the market, THIS ONE REALLY WORKS! Click Here for more information.
